The Centurions’ 2027 season came to a disappointing close on January 23rd, as they fell 28-13 to the Orca in the World Championship at Vancouver. Head Coach George Coaxum’s squad fought hard but ultimately was undone by a dynamic Orca rushing attack and crucial turnovers in the fourth quarter. This game marked a bitter end to a season defined by ups and downs, continuity challenges, and flashes of potential that, unfortunately, fell short on the biggest stage.
Phoenix opened the game with solid defensive stands, but offensive breakthroughs were scarce early on. The Centurions missed a chance to take an early lead when kicker Thomas Moore’s 37-yard field goal attempt just missed wide right late in the first quarter. Despite this, the Centurions struck first in the second quarter thanks to a precision 10-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Paul Ponder to wideout Andrew Castillo, kicking off the scoring at 7-0 in favor of Phoenix. However, the Orca quickly responded with a 48-yard touchdown strike from Andre Silva to William Brown, tying the game at 7-7.
Moore, Phoenix’s reliable kicker, redeemed himself by connecting on a lengthy 55-yard field goal in the second quarter, giving the Centurions a narrow 10-7 advantage. He added another 54-yard field goal in the third quarter to extend the lead to 13-7. However, the Centurions could not capitalize further on offensive drives, with most attempts stalling before reaching scoring range.
Defensively, Phoenix showed resilience, holding the Orca to minimal passing yardage (137 yards) but struggled to contain their ground game. Orca’s backs carried the load, with Christopher Pruett rushing for 82 yards and Lance Wight adding 55 yards and two receiving touchdowns. Roy King also chipped in with 65 yards and a receiving score. Orca’s 216 rushing yards clearly tilted the field in their favor.
The crucial turning point came early in the fourth quarter. After the Centurions missed another potential field goal, Lance Wight broke loose for a 25-yard touchdown run, giving Orca a 14-13 lead. The subsequent fumble by Centurions’ Charles Booth, recovered by Orca’s Stephen Lewis, swung momentum completely. Orca capitalized quickly with a 5-yard rushing touchdown by Roy King, extending the lead to 21-13, and further sealed the game with an additional touchdown drive.
Phoenix’s offense showed moments of synchronization, illustrated by Ponder’s 23 completions for 158 yards and one touchdown, complimented by a steady ground game netting 128 yards and a rushing score. Yet, the team’s inability to convert key opportunities in the red zone, combined with four missed field goals overall, left points on the board that could have changed the complexion of this tightly contested game.
For Coach George Coaxum, this result was a challenging setback after guiding the team through a rollercoaster season. The Centurions demonstrated heart and discipline but were ultimately overpowered by Orca’s balance and opportunistic defense. While this loss stings, the foundation laid this year—especially on defense—provides some optimism looking ahead.
As the cold reality of the defeat settles in, players and staff alike will need to reflect deeply on missed chances and inconsistent offensive rhythm that characterized their 28-13 World Championship loss. Still, the hard work throughout the season and determination to compete on such a stage speaks volumes about this team’s character. For the Centurions and their fans, the focus now shifts to regrouping and building toward what they hope will be a stronger campaign next year.
Centurions Fall Short in Hard-Fought World Championship Clash Against Orca
Despite a gritty effort and key contributions from Paul Ponder and Thomas Moore, Phoenix’s Centurions drop a 28-13 decision to Orca in the 2027 World Championship final.
